Perhaps the best of the "new atheist" books that were published around the same time.

Im all for the slating of religion but this was a bit of drivel. The voice of it sounded like a miserable old man. Kinda just name dropped a load of people who I had never heard of. Had some interesting bits about the history of religion and how its original sources arent reliable!

This was definitely thought provoking. I liked the time Hitchens took to share his points in a historical context and also with current day examples. Some obvious (9/11), and some not so obvious. As an avid reader, I found things he shared about authors and their published works to be very interesting.

That being said, Hitchens (not surprisingly) is smarter than I. Thankfully I read this on my kindle and was able to utilize the dictionary... a lot. Which was my main complaint. As I told my partner while reading this, "Ugh. I thought I was a mildly intelligent person, but rather than using the word 'sanguinary' can we maybe just say 'causing bloodshed'?"

Have you ever used the word 'polemic' in real life?? Perhaps this is my polemic aimed at Hitchens! (That is "a strong verbal or written attack" in case you didn't catch it.) I'm glad I finally got around to this one. I did learn a lot and for that I am grateful.

This is not for everyone, but I found it outstanding. The man is a walking encyclopedia, with references from classical to contemporary works and great thinkers. In light of the challenges in our world today, in which horrific acts of terrorism are being performed in the name of God, this gives some interesting perspective. After borrowing this from the library, I got my own copy so I can revisit it.
