This book started off so strong but then it kind of fizzled and the pace slowed to a crawl. I liked the idea of the book - jazz and race in the shadow of the Second World War. The fact that the characters had wound up in Europe after leaving America to escape the racism there was an interesting twist of fate and I loved how Edugyan addressed that. However, Sid seemed like the least interesting character to focus on - I get why Edugyan did, but at times it just felt like he was sitting there observing happenings of far more interesting characters.
