This book gave me a case of The Big Sad. I got to about 80% through then decided to skip to the conclusion to get it over with, mainly because it really made me feel hopeless. As the book was originally published in 2014, I was hoping to learn a little bit about where we were (and hoped to see a substantial shift in action in comparison). Instead, my take-away was that in 2014 it was pretty much already past the point of no-return, that we will most likely exceed the 2 degree Celsius warming ‘target’ in the near future, and that not a whole lot of radical change has happened between then and now. Big business (and the small people behind them set to lose a lot of money) are unlikely to shift to more sustainable options when they can rake in far more profit by using fossil fuels. Also, the entrepreneurs that seem to support green tech/future sustainability in their PR, don’t seem to follow through on promises on funding and actively do things that counteract any headway they have made (looking at Branson & Bezos heading to space for a bit of a laugh… cool move dudes).
I’ll be honest – I haven’t done a whole lot of background reading past this book so maybe I’m missing the point or this is just one perspective of a very complex issue. But I’ll give Klein this, her writing was exhaustive in detail (perhaps TOO exhaustive if you get me). I’d be interested to read more on the topic in the future, but for now I think I’ll steer clear – this left me feeling like as an individual I have very little power, and without joining huge protests I can enact very little change.

‘As George Monbiot, The Guardian’s indispensable environmental columnist, put it on the twenty-year anniversary of the Rio Earth Summit, “Was it too much to have asked of the world’s governments, which performed such miracles in developing stealth bombers and drone warfare, global markets and trillion-dollar bailouts, that they might spend a tenth of the energy and resources they devoted to these projects on defending our living planet? It seems, sadly, that it was.”’

god it took my forever to get through this book but wow, so many good points. reading this ten years after publication has me a bit sad that none/very few of the measures discussed that would help to slow climate change have happened. very educational. naomi klein is the best

Though 10 years old, the argument is still more important than ever, but feels just as difficult to achieve. Very well written and doesn’t shy away from the fact that stopping climate change will necessitate destroying our current institutions to create a much better world on the other side.

Ningún libro me había llevado en una montaña rusa de emociones como este, menos uno de no ficción. La esperanza y la tristeza toman turnos y la verdad no estoy seguro de cuál ganó al final.
