Ben Sears’ Plus Man is the modern-day heir to Hergé’s Tintin, but without all the gross racism, orientalism, or anti-semitism. These books are ridiculously fun mystery-adventures, with some fantastic characters and beautifully detailed and vibrant art.

I am always excited to read a new Plus Man book, and this latest—House of the Black Spot—is the best yet. If you haven’t yet read a Plus Man book, they’re basically a near-future version of the Tintin comics with a small dash of Adventure Time thrown in for good measure. Some of the stories can be surprisingly complex, especially for books aimed at young readers, but the two main characters—Plus Man and the robot Hank—always keep the stories grounded in an immediately legible and lighthearted milieu.

These are books to read and share with others: young, old, black, brown, white, male, female, non-binary, whatever. It’s a book with a ton of heart, a lot of exuberance and passion, and some of the most imaginative and rich artwork going!
