"The Williamson tunnels are a good example of how fragile our knowledge of the past is, of how easily stuff can be forgotten - how mysterious the world of only a few generations back can be if we lose the receipts."

This is a fun, witty, engaging book, and one which I learnt so many random facts from that I might never have otherwise. Some chapters are particularly fascinating and eye-opening, and I now have a bunch of new places I'm keen to visit.

This book was written in the early 2000s, and mostly that makes for a fun vibe, but there is the odd uncomfortable remark that hasn't aged too well, and I particularly didn't enjoy the 'Mad Jack' chapter due to the way it glosses over Mad Jack's harmful politics and involvement in slavery. Luckily, the tone of the book on the whole is more progressive, and I mostly had a fun time reading it; I just really wish that chapter had been cut out.

This was definitely a random read, given that some of the information is likely out of date, and naturally I found some parts more interesting than others, but I did enjoy it overall and it was good to dive into something escapist and a bit different.
