This is a weird combination hipster fashion novel meets love story meets some weird virtue signaling..or something...
I am not sure I got it or get it or something...In fact, I am not sure I understand this work at all--I mean it clearly violates the show don't tell rule; but, more importantly, it reads like a novel by your favorite grad student. You know that one that TA'd the Big Intro to Literature class...something just feels off about this work--written in committee at some level, too short, yet too well edited...I am not sure--a weird work for sure...

I liked this book but I don't think it lived up to its full potential. It was beautifully written and the premise was so interesting! A mixed race African-American and Jewish girl travels to Africa and falls in love with a Muslim man: we kept getting teasers of her thought processes as she adjusted to new cultures, religions, and national politics, but I kept wishing these were developed further.

I wasn’t sure before I finished Ade, but I am sure now. It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. Especially when you can remember everything. Ade remembers two idealistic lovers who learn that the world is too dark to contain the light of their love. Because it is love that introduces them to the limits of death, disease, and destruction, the narrator can treasure every moment she spent living a life that did not belong to her. The strengths of the book are not its plot, character development, or prose, but its ability to extend memory across continents and oceans to connect lovers across time and space who thought they had lost each other but only need to remember.

This book is very short, but I hardly noticed because there is so much story packed into the few pages that are offered. It is not the overly dramatic love story that I am use to, but it is bright, vivid and beautifully real. I am looking forward to whatever else Rebecca Walker has to offer.

It is awesome to read a piece by a true writer whose love for words is evident by my transportation to the setting of the book.
