I did not enjoy the experience of reading this book, but it certainly needs to be read. It talks about a part of the Russian history that is often ignored by the government. I'm glad I read it, it made me more aware of what life in the GULAG camps in the USSR looked like. I think about it as more of a non-fiction, so I can't rate it. The language was difficult, a lot of slang, but that's how people talked back then. There were a few things that impressed me the most:

- Заключенным не положено знать время - за них это знают вышестоящие
- Заключенные сами строют себе тюрьму, сами окружают ограду проволокой, чтобы им самим же невозможно было сбежать
- Человека лучше пристрелят, чем дадут ему сбежать
- Человечность заключенных, сохранившаяся в них. Иван Денисович просидел в лагере 8 лет, но он добро относится к глухому Сеньке, и делится своей едой с Алешей.
- Разнообразие человеческих характеров.
