I must be in the minority with this book. . .I was not impressed. I thought it was one of the weakest Star Wars novelizations I've ever read.

By weakest, I don't really mean that the writing was weak. The writing was fine, but I really dislike novelizations that don't really expand on the movie and this one didn't do so enough to keep me interested.

The inner thought of the characters didn't really tell me anything I didn't infer on my own by watching the film, with the possible exception of Bhodi Rook. I really wanted some back story about Cassian Andor and I'm really quite disappointed that it wasn't there. I like novelizations that contain extra material. This one hardly had any at all.

There were supplements throughout. Snippets of data salvaged from Imperial records, taken from Rebellion writings, etc. Although this information should have been interesting, it was terrible boring in the way it was presented. I didn't like how it pulled me out of the story.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I'd read it closer to when I saw the film, when I was still awash in feels. I'd hoped it would patch over some of the film's flaws, but despite Freed's best work -- and he does an excellent job, really -- they are even more apparent when you're not looking at cool space action and Diego Luna's face. Nevertheless, there's still something raw about this story I respond to. Nothing gets to me more than people being brave and self-sacrificing against overwhelming odds.

Minus points for Baze and Chirrut's relationship being described as fraternal, though. Obvious space husbands are obvious.

This book was very well written. The story moved at a good pace. No trudging through a multitude of pages waiting for some action.

Not having seen the movie (yet, waiting for the Blu-ray), I pre-ordered this book August 31, 2016 and think it is a wortwhile, very good adaption, as stated by the publisher with additional scenes giving more insight.
Well, that remains to be seen, when compared to the movie. Will add to this review then, or add that as a comment.

Dark, so far as I remember from the official Star Wars movies/books the highest body-count. Body-count being counted as viewed deaths on-screen, so killing and showing 10 people during combat counts, blowing up a city or a moon does not count, as you do not see the people die.

Reasonably fast read, also as I did only know the other parts of the story (Princess Leia, RIP Carrie Fisher meeting R2D2/C-3Po etc.), only few things where obvious. Some twists where not, and the newly introduced persons where complex and well written, mostly. The blind Jedi was a bit repetitive with his chanting and musings, and could have been deeper and more developed.

Recommended, even for non-Star Wars-fans. But normal fans will get more out of this book.

I am a FAN of Rogue One and Cassian Andor with everything in me!! This expanded on some POVs that I would’ve loved to see in the movie, I feel fed and satisfied 😌

“Just a smile so ordinary it seemed to change Jyn from a hero out of myth into a women he might have known and understood.
He hadn’t known her, didn’t know her, of course. There wasn’t the time.”

Jyn and Cassian invented love
Nothing more perfect than two people meeting, being actual soulmates, being so similar they can’t stand the other but still changing and inspiring each other for the better, and dying in each other’s arms, breathing and hearts matching, no kiss or love declaration shared asfghhjkjkhjg
