I have mixed feelings about the book.

At times I felt it was overdrawn. Other times I really enjoyed the story. The guest characters were so unlikeable it was hard to read so much about them. I really enjoyed the angle of Jewish Detective dealing with motivation on Jewish Holocaust victims. It really made the crimes of war hammer home and angle of Daniel being the moral judge of the killer

Nearly every character in this story felt like they were miserable, but each in their own way. They were well-characterized and believable, but It made it a little hard to get through the middle chapters knowing what was ahead.

A lot of story is revealed by characters reading notes left behind by characters no longer present, which cuts a lot of potential drama. 

I did see the ending coming, though the final revelation of the motivation behind the crimes was a surprise. And I can see why the ending is controversial.

Not a particularly enjoyable read but not a terrible one either.
Binging P.D. James or else I might have given it a higher rating.
