3.75 stars. Classed as a middle grade book, even though the content is pretty serious, but the writing is definitely middle grade. I want to hang out with addy and go for a hike with her and Ryder at the farm in paradise. This book emphasizes the importance of getting city kids opportunities in nature (although may scare some off), climate change and the threat of wildfires better than Smokey the bear. The thought put into the themes in this book by the author were made clear in the afterword and bumped up my rating a bit.

A coming-of-age story. A survival story. A climate change story.

Six Black city teens head to the California wilderness one summer. Each of them has their specific reason for being there. Addy is burdened by the memories of a tragic fire that killed her parents when she was a toddler. As the summer goes on, they learn new skills (hiking, rock climbing, camping, campfire safety), they also learn about trusting other people. On their longest hike of the summer, they wake to the smell of a horrific forest fire. Will Addy be able to remember everything she’s learned to survive or will she freeze in fear of the fire - the same thing that’s been burning holes in her life for years?

A great middle grade adventure/survival book for fans of The hatchet or The black kids.

Addy is one of five other Black city kids sent to a Wilderness camp for the summer where she learns survival skills and gains a new respect for nature.

The book delves into issues of race, class and climate change in a smart and thoughtful way all while telling a suspenseful story featuring an unforgettable protagonist.

Highly recommended and great on audio!

This book was so suspenseful! I held my breath so many times during the story as I didn’t know how the characters were going to survive.

Quick read and a great introduction to learning how precious our wildlife is. I would definitely recommend this to a child.
