This was not an easy book for me to get into. It took work. But I'm glad I stuck with it, because once I got there the book had me hooked. Just know that you've got to get about halfway through the book before the description of it really starts to fit. That doesn't mean the first half is wasted, but it would have been very helpful for me to know that going in. I got very impatient waiting for that story to start instead of just enjoying slowly getting to know all the characters.

4.5 stars — a charming story with a lot of the spirituality stuff I really enjoy: animals spirits, parallel realities, magic. It’s nice to look at the world through different eyes and imagine possibilities.

This was such a sweet and heartwarming book. The writing style was simple and I’m sure intentionally imitated oral storytelling style. I definitely preferred the parts that took part in the Reflecting World and wished the story centered more around their lives there - I’d definitely read a sequel of Oli looking for his siblings. The parts on Earth were a bit more far fetched and the simplicity of writing style contributed to making our world feel flat while it enhanced the Reflecting World. I was worried about how it would resolve, and while it was a bit convenient I was satisfied and glad it didn’t go in my imagined directions. I think this book is a bit more middle grades than YA but I would love to read it aloud with children in the future.
Very happy my school district gave this out for free to our students!
