An enchanting story of friendship, following dreams, and reaching beyond limits others put on you. Endearing characters and writing, combined with a quietly adventurous plot, create a story that warms the heart and leaves the reader hopeful.

Firefly isn't like the other fireflies, she wants to fly to the moon. Cricket isn't like the other crickets, his dream is to become a great catcher. Vole is the last of the river voles, the rest disappeared long ago. Peter, a human boy, is suffering a devastating loss. These four find each other and together they help and support each other's dreams. A lovely book about friendship, feeling different, and finding your place in the world. Highly recommended for grades 2-4.

This book was a little too sweet for me, but I did like the fact that each of the animal characters had to adjust their expectations and goals.

My kids really loved this book, and I enjoyed reading it to them. They found it sad, but they enjoyed hearing about the adventures of cricket, firefly and Peter. Definitely recommend this family read.

I only read the first 50 pages (couldn't find an advance copy of the entire book. Although at first I thought it was a bit wordy, I got involved in the story of a firefly, a cricket and a vole and would like to find out what happened when they met a human! (It definitely seems to be leading that way).

I'll admit, it took me a while to get into this one. It was the characters' names that did it. I was bothered that Firefly was a firefly but the other ones didn't have names? Or are they all named Firefly? Was her Elder capitalized because they had a relationship? It continued with the crickets and the vole. Once I got past that name confusion, I settled into a lovely story about dreams, individuality, adventure, and coming to terms with bad things that happen to you. The illustrations are definitely worth looking at.

Read aloud to the kids, even Gwen sat for most of it. This book had absolutely stunning illustrations, and beautiful word pictures of friendship. It was a little slow at times, hence the 4 stars, but really enjoyable, and just a sweet and poignant story. Great for kids and fun even as an adult.
