this was a hard one to rate because I loved the idea of the story, but the writing style and narrative is a hard pass. having never read this or seen the play, movies, etc I didn't know fully what to expect, but I kind of know the premise. or at least I thought I did. either the play adaptation is completely different or I am way off base.

this to me is more of a horror gothic novel about an extremely deformed madman stalker taking what he thinks is his and threatening everyone in his way. whereas my understanding of the play is a woman forced to choose between 2 men she loves for very different reasons.

this was a hard read because of the writing style and it being a million years old. I felt like I was back in high school doing required readings. the way I got through this was tackling it a chapter or 2 at a time and breaking it up with something more contemporary in-between.

I am going to watch the play and I would LOVE to find a decent retelling of this, because I feel this could be an amazing dark romance with way more heartache and passion between Christine and Erik!  I WANT MY HEART RIPPED OUT!

oh, and Raoul is an idiot.

I was not expecting Raoul to be an annoying, whiny, little bitch. I spent most of the second half of the book wanting to strangle him for being so obnoxious the whole time. If he wasn't whining he was crying but that scene of him running around trying to find the Phantom with his glock cracked me up so bad. This was fine! I can see why this inspired so many movies and the musical but frankly I would rather watch one of those than read this again. 3 stars for how campy it was!

I've read the book as fan of the musical. Other than Mme. Giry being written as Mame Giry, this is a very good translation
