I really love Calvin Demmer stories. These two were great, both stories had me hooked from the very start! I did not see the ending of Highway Hunger coming and I loved it. Hotel Madness was darker and more gory but so much fun. I cant wait for my next read by this author.

"Dud, Dud, Dud." Felipe shook his head. "The people who work on the roads here-_the cops and other emergency services and so on-all know about it. They all respect it. You can't go breaking the rules. Not even if you're new. That could get you killed, but it could also create trouble for all of us.
We don't know this thing's full capabilities. It's best to not stir trouble. Let it be."

The first story, highway hunger, was an interesting little short that read almost like a more grown up version of a Goosebumps book. It was a bit goofy, but had some disturbing imagery of dead animals and broken bones. A decent little read that I didn't remember too long after. 2.5/5

Tallulah noticed the lack of stars in the sky. Not even the moon was visible, and she presumed dark clouds must reign overhead. The only illumination came from gothic gaslights on the walkways in front of the many rooms. She couldn't ascertain if the temperature was hot or cold, and no air graced her skin.
She stood on a narrow graveled road with more rooms lining each side. There were no parking bays; there were no cars, and this caused her apprehension to squirm like cold worms beneath her skin.

This one was a lot better and a lot darker, but I already had the story figured out as I started it and it didn't deviate too much from where I expected it to go until the last page. With the setup for her taking over running a specific area in hell, I wish we got a full story about that. 4/5.

meh

The first story clearly was influenced by Harry Potter and badly done. the second held my attention better and I enjoyed it more. But I don’t think I’d recommend this to anyone

I’ve been behind on reviews over this past year, but I’m slowly catching up. Last year I had the pleasure of reading Double Barrel Horror volume 3, featuring two of Calvin Demmer’s short stories. Both were engaging and memorable. All of Demmer’s short fiction I’ve read has yet to disappoint!

Highway Hunger and Motel Madness both fall in line with what I've come to expect from Demmer's short stories: page turning scenarios. Highway Hunger was my favorite, because I love monster stories and this one was a clever take on a Lovecraftian monster that left me wanting more.

These two stories were a lot of fun. Highway Hunger was super creepy and Stephen King-esk. I would love to see HH be turned into a novel--I wanted more! Motel Madness was also creepy and had some body horror that made me cringe. This one was a little predictable except the ending and I enjoyed the comedic parts.

I really enjoyed this small collection and will definitely read more of Calvin's work.

Thank you to the author for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.

4.5/5 rounded up for GR

Branching out within my reading style. I've come upon so many new authors and how they write and perceive the horror genre! It's been an absolute amazing experience and Calvin Demmer has me enthralled when it comes to short stories!

These two stories were quite entertaining!

Highway Hunger
Can you imagine an unforseen monster, traveling underneath the tar roads, collecting roadkill? A monster that must not be interfered with, or it will come for you instead! Creepy! No thanks!

Motel Madness
Waking up in what she believes is a recurring horrific dream, when in reality , she is paying for her sins. It's a nightmare! In hell! What she decides at the end of the story actually made me chuckle. Disturbing, but still I smiled!

I enjoyed reading these!!

A huge thank you to the talented (and convincing) author for a free e-book to read and enjoy!
All opinions are my own, this is my honest review.
