I think that this book set up a good base for the rest of the story. While I know that that sometimes needs to happen to further the story, it does make it a bit boring. I liked the characters and the magical world. However, I was confused about the FMC relationship with Tovan from the beginning. She has a crush on him from the very beginning but you don’t really have any reason to think he’s not totally terrible. I think giving us some “sneak peeks” into his true nature would have maybe kept me more invested. The ending was really good and kept me on the hook for the next one.

The SLOWEST of burns, and stuck in the enemies part of enemies-to-lovers right throughout this book, yet still wholly enjoyable. I am SEATED for the next installment.
This and The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy (the 1st in a duology) came out in the same day, and I loved them both, but I liked this one had a bit (I literally mean 0.25 of a point) more. I mention Irresistible Urge to say that while they are broadly under the same theme and come from the same publishing house, they are otherwise completely different and both excellent books and worlds to get lost in.
Rose in Chains was long-ish but full of action, and had more characters (than the main couple) to become fully invested in, just by the nature of the story being about crown twins from one magical society who butt heads with the young people from the hierarchical line of people from another magical society, who primarily use a different sort of magic. Lots of room for the author to branch out into romances between other couples, even though we are nowhere near the HEA for the main couple.
Excellent world building. I could see this series having a huge global following.
Now to wait a whole year for book 2 :'(

was getting 5⭐️ vibes early on despite the dark content - loved the flashbacks setting the tone for the character's relationships, the slow burn / yearning, the magic system etc. I did not read the original fanfic but could definitely see the inspiration in the main character traits, setting felt similar to Malfoy Manor etc but it didn’t bother me or take me out of the story.
taking off 1/2 star because some of the miscommunication between the MCs towards the end annoyed me (especially after certain conceptsmind cloaking and doctoring memories were introduced that could have remedied things)

ALSO also this is probably just me but I am still so confused about how the collars work for mind magic or heart magic but not both 🧐 and the girls can’t employ their mind magic but their heart magic can be siphoned? does everyone have both magics??
