Rose in chains is Julie Soto debut as a fantasy writer and my goodness was that such a great debut. I have previously read a romance by her and most recently a YA thriller and I thoroughly enjoy her writing. This book was so well written and I did really enjoy reading it. I enjoyed the high stakes and the enemies to lovers trope was so well portrayed. I did hear this is book 1 of a trilogy and I cannot wait to pick the next books up when they release. I enjoyed that the author is willing to write books in different genres and introduce us to new characters in her stories to fall in love with or to despise. I really enjoyed this book and felt that the writing and world building was very well executed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette audio for the advance listeners copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

In Toven we lust

Firstly, I approached this book with no prior knowledge or expectations. It reportedly began as a fanfiction, but I was unfamiliar with the backstory.

The only reason this book is not receiving five stars is due to some initial confusion caused by the time jumps. However, the book presents a fascinating magical narrative, featuring a formidable female main character in the making and a promising potential couple.

It is a slow burn, with much of the book dedicated to world-building and laying the foundation for the trilogy.

By the end, I was disheartened that it was over and eager to have the sequel in my hands as soon as possible.

My gratitude to Julie and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I think that this book set up a good base for the rest of the story. While I know that that sometimes needs to happen to further the story, it does make it a bit boring. I liked the characters and the magical world. However, I was confused about the FMC relationship with Tovan from the beginning.
She has a crush on him from the very beginning but you don’t really have any reason to think he’s not totally terrible.
I think giving us some “sneak peeks” into his true nature would have maybe kept me more invested. The ending was really good and kept me on the hook for the next one.
