I was expecting this to be a more general look/analysis of capitalism. Not sure that I got much out of it but some of the essays were interesting.

I loved this book. I bought copies for both of my thirty-something sisters because we need to have this conversation, or maybe we already are having it and this is fuel for the fire. White women need to interrogate their privilege, and Biss does it with a light, yet well- argued, open- ended touch. Her exploration is adventuresome because it is poetic and analytical and good-humored and honest in a kind of confessional way. As an artist, I too fight the consumer identity... even while taking a rich ambivalent joy in owning things. I recommend this book. The end has a kind of artist statement in the notes, and it rang philosophically true.
