I was hoping this would be my first five-star book of the year, but alas, not quite. I loved the sparse writing that held back on details and yet still seemed to provide everything you needed to feel the story intensely and personally. But there were just a few too many disconnects for me to feel like it really drove the parable home.

This novel is about a man impersonating a clergyman. There are certainly some implausible elements to the story that I found hard to get beyond. What saves this story is the writing. Damon Galgut has a way of not just telling a story but describing the human condition. He has a Cormac McCarthy or Steinbeck way about his writing. Its like god is watching and detailing everybody's actions, motives and weaknesses. Despite being a flawed novel, I liked how he deals with religion, good, evil, being gay, and basic human nature. I give this one a 4.2/5.
