Yay for Agatha Raisin! She's the perfect companion for a gloomy day when I have a load of reports to churn out at work.

The mystery was fun to work out and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me engaged. The characters, especially the regular cast, are funny and feel very real and fleshed out. I suppose after 30 books, they should. This is only my third book in the series - I read the first two - and watched most of the TV series. I can absolutely see myself hunting down the older books to enjoy though.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the audiobook to review!

Ok, but not great. Not quite staying true to Agatha's personality. Too many physical altercations.

While the difference between this title in the series and those written [fully] by M.C. Beaton is discernible, I wasn't as disappointed with it as I was expecting to be based on the reviews I read. I do agree that Agatha is missing a bit of her "Agathaness," but I'm wondering if some of that wasn't an intentional attempt to show her evolution (while being true to the spirit of who she is), and not simply a misapprehension of the character.

I also agree that the revisit of James and Agatha as a romantic duo is questionable. I was really pulling for her and Charles to get on the same page and was fully on board with them as "happy for now" pairing as the series nears its presumable end. That said, the on-page action does show through adequate breadcrumbing throughout how James ends up being the better choice given the evidence Agatha has to work with. As long as the series continues (continued), it benefits (benefitted) Agatha to not be settled (her ongoing dissatisfaction and angst on the romance front are critical to her perspective and the novel's humorous beats), but I also fully imagine that she and James will manage to torpedo their reunion (off-page) at some point in the not-too-distant future beyond the series end.

With that, I'm off to start the most recent (and maybe last) book, Down The Hatch.

I'm honestly not sure why I keep reading these books, it's probably in hate-reading territory at this point. That said, the ghostwriter did a good job, and while I didn't find Agatha charming or funny (but really never have). As with all the Agatha Raisin books, the mystery is serviceable.
