This was a 3.5 or 4 stars depending on the day.

As first books in a series goes, it was okay. There was a lot of world building and establishing narratives which are typical for first books. I am excited what's next in store for the gang.

James "Jem" Carstairs also may or may not own my heart.

The twists were outstanding though. I did not see a lot of them coming which is always amazing. I might bump it up a star for excellent side characters.

I feel like I will likely have more to say review-wise in the following books but for now this is it.

FIRST OFF SPOILERS! BEWARE!

When I saw the book the Clockwork Angel, my first impression was that it was exactly like The Mortal Instruments. A friend told me that she liked it better and that it was not like it very much at all. But after reading it I still stand by my "it's like the first series" conclusion. It's about a girl that doesn't know who she is, she meets a cocky, arrogant, and usually attractive Shadowhunter and falls madly in love with him, another boy is pining for her, creating an annoying love triangle, and she finds out that her parents weren't what she thought they were.

Although it is very similar to the Mortal Instruments, I also found it quite different to some extent. I thought that the Clockwork creatures were an interesting idea, although I'm not sure if I like them or not. I also liked the idea of the Mundanes being the bad guys. Although I was suspicious of Mortmain I was still completely convinced that De Quincy was the Magister.

The one thing I absolutely loved about the book was the Victorian Era. I am a Downton Abby fan and to read a book in the same Era while continuing to watch the show made me really ecstatic. Another thing I loved - and thought was an improvement from the Mortal Instruments - was the characters. Yes Jace and Will are really similar, but they are also completely different. Besides appearances, Will's walls seem to be built up much higher than Jace's. He seems to shield himself more from love. (Also I personally fell more in love with Will than Jace - just saying) Another character that I enjoyed was Tessa. I found her more relatable than Clary and less annoying.

The second thing that I 100% loved about this book was all the family connections and the connections to the Mortal Instruments. I love stuff like that and I thought that Cassandra did a brilliant job at it.

Tessa Grey received a letter from her brother with a ticket to England to join him after the death of their Aunt. Tessa is met by two sisters sent by her brother when she arrived in England. She soon learns the truth of why these sisters wanted her and meets those who can help her learn the whole truth.

I enjoyed the book. The setup was good even if the characters were not anything new. I wished the love triangle played out more. The author told more than showed at times. For example, she described Will with blue-grey coloring under his eyes and then he was tired. I believe the description showed Will was tired.

It is a good YA novel overall. I would recommend it to others.
