I'm genuinely sad there's not a third book in this series. I was hoping I would come to Goodreads and find out this was a trilogy.
I was absolutely obsessed with Even the Darkest Stars last year, and sadly this didn't grab me nearly as much. There was less mountain traversing and more politics, which normally I would be down for. But that first book was so intensely atmospheric, and really grabbed me by my heel and dragged me bodily from mountain cliff to mountain cliff. So, I was a little sad not to love this as much.
But to be fair, I did REALLY enjoy this. So much more was learned about River, and his family, and the main characters felt a lot more fleshed out.
Including Lusha. Who I still REALLY don't like.
Sad to not have another part, but I am really looking forward to reading more by Heather Fawcett.

I really enjoyed the plot, and the romance and Ragtooth was really great in this. What I didn't enjoy was Lusha and how she treated Kamzin, how everything that went wrong was Kamzins fault, I found it really annoying and a little unnecessary. The things that we learnt in this were great, like what familiars are, and who they are. How the Emperor originally cast the binding spell was really interesting, and we learnt more about River and his past which was enjoyable, it makes you like him a little more.
I did find that the ending where it's revealed that River is what he is was kinda predictable, like of course that's what happens.

What an adventure! This was such a beautiful story.
This duology has definitely made it into my absolute favorites.
