I read the first one so long ago that I don't remember why I loved it so much. This one wasn't unlikable, but I think as an adult I'm becoming increasingly cynical about tweens and teens who are competing to be special. like, Gryffindor wins everything every single year. competition is healthy, but it's super annoying to me when characters who are so young are trying so hard to be adults. Genna's obsession with James and being skinny, and Zoe's campaign to put better food in school lunches, are a touch too after-school-special for me to identify with. like, if this book were written 20 years ago, it would be about peer pressure and saving the whales. someone who's not me (and not 30) would probably enjoy it a lot more.
it probably doesn't help that immediately before reading this light tween fiction, I burned through a thick non-fiction book about a serial rapist in Tokyo. this chaser was a bit too saccharine.

I reviewed this for Booklist. It's fun, light summer fare - perfect for middle school girls looking for a clean romance. Bonus points if they're into the local food movement.
