And we're back to the funny. I am really, really liking this series. I am a little embarassed to read it in public, just because I feel like maybe I'm too old for it? Or...something, I don't know. The utter geek in me is thrilled to be seen reading it, but the part of me that loves to be seen reading feels like I'm wasting the opportunity to show how smart I am.

It's the kind of inner conflict I enjoy.

This volume was lit! I didn’t think we’d get to the Nina storyline so soon. While this story certainly deals with heavy topics from the start (with the boys losing their bodies and all), I can’t help but feel like this is the moment you’re told, in no uncertain words, that this story doesn’t shy away from heavy themes, and actually looks long and hard into them. It’s also the start of Ed questioning what alchemy is about, and the introduction of one of my favorite characters, Scar! Can’t wait to read the rest.

This volume delves a bit more into Alphonse, which is much appreciated. I think the next volume would talk more about his feelings about his soul being bound to the suit of armor.

We meet Winry, who’s an interesting character. I appreciated the way she was written a lot more than Horikoshi’s handling of Mei. Winry seems capable and smart for the most part and the focus was on her skill alone.

We learn about Colonel Mustang’s ambitions, which I’m sure will lead to him making some shady decisions in the future.

This continues the dark thread with human sacrifices being part of the story. There’s a cliffhanger at the end and I’ll definitely read the next one!
