This is my second Vivek Shraya book, and I listened to it on Spotify. The story focusses on the unlikely friendship between Toronto based artists Rukmini and Neela, while offering a window into the Canadian music landscape for women of colour.
The story uses the main plot to display truths about our terminally online world. This book explores the level of fame only possible in the social media era, where you can be famous enough for your every word to be analyzed, but still need to work a day job. It also examines who gets to walk away unscathed after an online scandal.
I found the middle of the book, after the titular subtweet, the most gripping. The beginning of the book at times felt like a fictionalized essay on social media rather than a story. I would however recommend this book to anyone who has a passing knowledge of twitter feuds, as I will definitely incorporate the perspective I gained from this book into my own social media consumption.
