What a memorable novella. Ring Shout is about a girl, Maryse, who is part of a gang hunting down demons from another world called Ku Kluxes. Part magical realism, part alternative history, this reminds me of the HBO adaptation of Watchmen. Its intensity is magnified by how much of it is real, even in spite of the more supernatural elements. Highly recommend. It goes so quick it’s hard to take more than one sitting to enjoy it.

I was really intrigued by the premise of this being a supernatural KKK historical fantasy. I wish I’d had a more successful time getting into the story.
I don’t know if I love reading dialogue written in dialect. I can’t get the voices right in my head, and I sound even worse out loud. I might pick up the audiobook one day. If the narrator does the dialect justice, I could see myself enjoying this.

I was eager to listen to the audiobook because I read a lot of reviews that said the narrator was excellent, but she just didn't do it for me. Perhaps a book I would have enjoyed more if I just read it. There were definitely some interesting ideas in here, and it reminded me a bit of [b:The Underground Railroad|30555488|The Underground Railroad|Colson Whitehead|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493178362l/30555488._SX50_.jpg|48287641] because they both take historical realities (the underground railroad, the KKK, Birth of a Nation, etc.) and give them a sort of magical realism or fantasy twist. Djèlí Clark definitely has his own particular tone and voice though, which comes through clearly in all of his books that I've read.
