I loved the beginning where Du Fu met Li Bai, and I found the embellished language to convey Li Bai’s character to its fullest extent and describe the natural scenery in a highly romanticised manner. Yet, the middle of the book felt a little like drudgery, perhaps because Du Fu consistently makes the same mistakes and consistently wanders about and drags his family along with him. The end of the book then sheds a stronger, sadder undertone which act as the perfect tragic end to Du Fu’s own tragic life. There are a lot of repeated details though which makes it a little difficult to follow sometimes.
Graphic: Alcohol and Grief
Moderate: Child death, Death, and War
Minor: Pregnancy, Sexual content, Injury/Injury detail, Classism, and Abandonment
