Five Sisters (2020) was written by Stephanie Campisi and illustrated by Madalina Andronic. Its poetic tone and deep, thought-provoking theme make it a great book for upper elementary or even middle school students. An old couple lives in the woods, and a tree gifts the old man a magic branch, which he carves into five magical dolls. The couple love the dolls as if they were their children. This story carries themes of longing, love, and family.
The writing may make this book difficult for some kids to understand without explanation, but it can be a great way to explore metaphor and different styles of writing. It would make for a good exercise in retelling or summarizing, because the text is so different than how kids would relay the story in their own words.
