I think he may have been overtired. He screamed while I was reading it and tried pushing it away. He was asleep within twenty seconds of the end.

My nephew wanted an extra story today. He wanted to read an old favorite. So he brought me the shy little kitten. It was my first time reading it. I don't know, the kitten seemed more independent than shy to me. She made a lot of friends out in the world all on her own, so anyway.

It's a cute story and it's a classic along with the Pokey little puppy in the Golden Book series.

The nephew enjoyed the story. I think getting a puppy has popped his dreams of wanting a cat, which he can't have, so maybe the book is enough.

It's from the 40s.

The Shy Little Kitten by Cathleen Schurr – I’m pretty sure that Gustaf Tenggren illustrated half of my favorite Little Golden books! Enjoy this sweetness! Happy Reading!

I read this while waiting for a table at the Swedish restaurant yesterday; it was at the Swedish shop across the street. The illustrator, Gustaf Tenggren, is Swedish-American. Anyway, I'm a sucker for cat books and the illustration of the shy little kitten looked very much like my big shy cat. The story was...well, for kids, but I did like the illustrations, which look like watercolor. The kittens just look so fuzzy! lol

A barn cat and her kittens go out for a walk, but one kitten, shyly keeping her eyes downcast, encounters a mole that her mother and rest of her litter overlooked. Not too shy to make friends, the kitten is introduced to a frog by the mole, and then a puppy and a squirrel, before returning to her family.

Schurr’s story ends with an all animal picnic and a jump in the pond. While this is a bit unrealistic—with the exceptions of tigers, cats consider water immersion an anathema—the young audience for this book will be so delighted with the cuteness of Tenggren’s “roly-poly” animals that they will ignore this improbability.
