feels weird to give a rating to a book the author never submitted for publishing and never knew was published….sorry jane but they raided ur early works

because of this it’s obviously not a perfectly formed and finished novel like her other works are (and i’m not including it in the big 6) but what’s good in this is GOOD! it’s so fun to see early versions of later characters pop up in here, i especially loved the letters between lady susan and alicia, and above all it is just fun!!! people always overlook how FUN and FUNNY jane austen is so im happy to see this shine in this little novella. the woman was clearly a genius to be writing this as a teenager and i love her always and forever

Rereading this because of the movie coming out this month... confusingly titled "Love and Friendship" but actually an adaptation of Lady Susan. It doesn't have the appeal of Jane Austen's more polished works, but I think I see how it could be amusing on screen.

There are no paragraphs and to much flowery language for my taste. I'm sure it's a good book but I can't read it.

Lady Susan is a novella written in an epistolary style (ie, the story is told through letters between characters). This novel was quite a bit different from all of Jane Austen’s other published works. Not only is the style different, but our main character, Lady Susan, is by no means someone the reader is rooting for. She is selfish, manipulative, and cold - the villain of the tale.

I found it interesting to read different perspectives of the same events and to get to the heart of Lady Susan’s true intentions and thoughts.

While still witty and interesting, Lady Susan is not one of my favorite Jane Austen novels. I tend to not love novels written in the epistolary style, and I felt the shortness resulted in less well-rounded and -developed characters.
