I greatly enjoyed this read. It has both stronger heroes and heroines which always make it a good read for me. There are many twists and turns in the plot with a complex cast with many back stories interwoven into the main plot. If you like a good mystery without a lot of gory details, this is the book for you.

I would highly recommend for a rating of 4 out of 5.

enjoyed how the book kept me guessing and I was never sure which direction it would go in, written quite cleverly as well.

Fluffy bodyguard tale with a really unsatisfying ending. Annoying writing. For example, I know Corte's helper is Claire duBois. We established that early on. Why on earth can't Deaver refer to her by one name after the introduction? Why does he insist on using both of her names? Does he think we've forgotten her and she needs to be introduced all over again? He does this with all of his character. It annoyed the crap out of me.

Great read, slightly predictable. I loved the extended use of game theory; it kept the book intriguing and educational. It also allows us to better understand the mind of Corte while he is at work.

This was my review for Kaiwaka Library...

The edge is the advantage you have over another person to get what you want. In this case, it's what may save your life - or cost it.

Protection officer Corte works for a little-known government agency, protecting people from kidnappers (lifters) and assassins (hitters) and finding out who it is who put the contracts out in the first place (the primary). He's very good at his job.

Word gets out that a lifter has been hired, and other than the household that has been targeted, the only other certainty is that the lifter is Henry Loving - who supposedly died some years ago. Clearly that was a fake. Corte has a particular interest in Loving, since he killed Corte's mentor after torturing him to extract information - and Corte heard the whole thing over the phone as it happened.

But who in the Kessler household is the target, and why? Some things are not as clear as they seem at first.

This is an exciting book - I did not want to put it down once I started. I've read only one book of Deaver's before ("The Bone Collector") which was also a good read. We have several of his titles on our shelves. He has written a few series, but this is a standalone novel.

This book is another of my favourites by Deaver. Really gripping scenes and dialogue that drives the book forward. Another one that I could not put down. When you are able to easily lose hours in a book, you know that is a very good sign of its calibre. The fact that it's stand alone means that you don't need any back story to get a feel for the characters so it's all contained.

Excellent!

Jeffery Deaver has always been one of my favorite authors and he does not disappoint here. This was literally a book that I found myself wanting to force myself to stay awake long after I should have gone to bed to read just one more chapter....

Great book.
