Read this a long time ago but didn’t quite finish so I never logged it. I remember liking it well enough, but the binding was so horrible I couldn’t stand it (often have this issue with Verso books!)

This is one I’ve had to work through at a slower pace a) because it’s at the partner’s place and b) because unsurprisingly, the subject matter is really fucking heavy. And instead of just focusing on countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti, Lowenstein also focuses the lens back on the UK and the US; immigration and prison systems and nations’ outsourcing of the handling of them isn’t spared the lens, and a lot of writers wouldn’t be willing to take that look at it. It’s thorough, but ends on a hopeful note, which is always good. It’s very much a spiritual successor to The Shock Doctrine, and builds on it. I recommend reading this if you can find it near you.
