The story centers around a mass murder, an explosion which sunk a ship, killing almost 200 people. In a feat of spectacularly bad timing, I began reading the day before the mass shooting in a school in Texas so I’ve spent this whole week thinking about mass murder. Reading was not an escape from the news in this situation. Context aside, it was solid but not my favorite in the series.

While there are still the trademark William Monk elements--tense conversations, panicked memories, desperate dutiful struggles--this is a softer, mellowed Monk we see. I skipped a few books and can see he's grown a lot. The barrister on the other hand, comes back from chastisement as the second-half narrator and seems more dewy-eyed and distant. Still like Monk best. Set on the Thames, plot centers around who hates the Empire, pretty interesting investigative techniques and theories.

This book was a little slow and at times I wasn't sure if it was going anywhere. The last quarter was the best, and I would probably give it three and a half stars.

Generally an Anne Perry fan, but I was disappointed in this one. Curiously dispassionate and procedural; the characters keep giving stirring speeches to explain why we should care about the case in question, but nothing about the narrative leaves us that invested in it. Totally not worth the overdue fines I'm going to have to pay so I could finish it.

I almost gave up on this one. I literally slogged through the first 2/3rds of the book. But I hung in there because I love Monk and this series. I'm glad I did. Perry brought it all together in the last part of the book.
