Very interesting to learn how language drives us and how we fall into cults

Like always with popular science books I wanted a bit more depth, a bit more data, a bit more something. But overall I can’t complain it was a nice overview.

Book Summary
A book about cults, how they form and how people get into them.

Book Review
I like the way she writes. It’s witty and engaging. Kept me interested the whole way through.

How I Discovered It
The Sounds like a Cult pod.

Who Should Read It
Anyone remotely interested in cults. Also MLMs and yoga.

Thoughts & Impressions
Again, love the way she writes. Book was engaging. Didn’t necessarily learn anything new about cults themselves. I didn’t know the story of Jonestown though. That was cray.

What I Liked About It
Writing style.

What I Didn’t Like About It
A lot of info I already knew.

How the Book Changed Me
I had no idea a super famous cult was just down the street from us in Rancho Santa Fe.

I thought the books content was interesting and well laid out. Montell  explores the different definitions of cult we hold in our society and where language convinces individuals to become a part of them. I wish she had gone a little deeper into explaining more of the language side of things. The book often felt like it introduced an idea and then moved on from it. I would have like to see a little more depth and linguistics within the novel. Montell also frequently uses an expansive vocabulary so be prepared to look up some words. Overall I thought the book was an interesting read and brought to light some aspects of cult culture I hadn’t previously thought of and would recommend it to anyone interested.
