Thanks to Casey Plett, southern Manitoba is a globally significant setting for trans storytelling. Who'd have imagined it? But A Dream of Woman, like Plett's earlier collection, A Safe Girl to Love, doesn't limit itself to Manitoba, and its stories are as itinerant as Plett herself has been. Her characters, once again here, feel compellingly realised. And they occupy sufficiently different trans experiences or phases of their trans experience to yield a variety in perspective which is appreciated in a short story collection of this kind. For my part, A Safe Girl to Love will remain my favourite collection by Plett. But that by no means implies A Dream of Woman ought to be left by the wayside.

huge thank you to netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book to review!! it was stunning<3

This is such a beautiful book celebrating transness, trans identity, and queerness. Casey Plett has such an incredible authorial voice (and narration voice, for that matter, since she narrates the audiobook and does a brilliant job bringing her characters to life) and was so deft at creating a web of intersectional, beautiful stories that I really recommend for people who also enjoyed Bernardine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other. This book is basically several stories of trans characters searching for meaning, navigating relationships (both platonic and sexual), and living their lives. I couldn't help but feel like I was reading something really, truly special. The intertwining narratives take a second to get acclimated to as they jump timelines and geographic space, but it's a joy to hear from the aforementioned characters in later parts of the book and see how their stories develop. Eagerly awaiting anything else Casey writes!

If you've been thinking about reading this book but haven't yet This Is Your Sign. If you haven't heard of this book This Is Your Sign to run out and buy it.

A Dream of a Woman is a collection of short stories centering trans women. This is the easiest 5 stars I've given in a long time. A nuanced, masterfully written, powerful collection of stories with wonderfully vivid characters. I'll be recommending this book to everyone I know
