This book started out rough. After finishing it, it almost feels like the first hundred or so pages was written by a different author. The initial writing was bad, the dialogue was basic, and the characters’ actions/dialogue didn’t seem to match up with their ages. I almost put it down within those first 100 or so pages. But I didn’t, and eventually it turned in to the Ken Follett writing I’m used to.
There were parts that were hard to read due to various triggers but that’s something one comes to expect from Ken Follett. He depicts real life, the good and the grisly aspects.
Overall I enjoyed the book. I think if it weren’t for the first 10-15% of the book I would have rated this as a 4. A good read for those that enjoy Historical Fiction based on events at the end of the Dark Ages in England.
