Short stories in a trench coat, pretending to unite into a bigger whole which however doesn’t quite come together… and after the big conclusion, there’s more short stories coming. I enjoyed the illustrations and some of the short stories packed a punch. Overall, though, it was an underwhelming experience.

I got so much more out of this read than I was expecting! I was drawn to it by the illustrations--expressive and adorable, in a style that I really connect with. The fables that make up this volume are humorous at times, sad at others, and deeply affecting all the way through. I felt pulled into the pre-history of Greenberg's imagined world, and hope that there will be more to follow.

This graphic novel was a good read. It is perhaps a bit slow to start and at first confusing, but the story builds quite lovely throughout the book. The story is written in the style of old stories passed down through word of mouth. It is the story of a boy who was split in pieces when he was a baby, and eventually put back together. However, it is discovered that one of the pieces is missing, and he must go on an adventure to find it. He is a great storyteller and this helps him through his travels, as he makes his way around the planet from one strange land to another until he finds what he's been missing.

The art style in this graphic novel fits with the story very well. Thick, expressive linework with great texture and movement. The color palette is minimal: black and white, and mainly primary colors red, yellow, and blue. The color is done with watercolor, and it gives a softness to the illustrations.

I just lost interest in this one. I had seen this years ago and wanted to read it, but that spark is gone. The stories were ok, but part of my increasing discomfort comes from the fact that the author is a white British woman, and I wasn’t sure what to make of the many Indigenous-coded stories at the beginning. Hopefully they’re grounded and come from real stories? I get the sense from reviews that this book eventually incorporates myths from many other cultures and sources, which is good. It just didn’t grab me (though the art is quite nice), and I haven’t felt compelled to read it for weeks.
