It was good, the characters were interesting...but I found myself asking over & over again, "so what's happening?" It felt like it took a long time to build & move main characters into place, and then...it was over? I wanted to get more explanations about what the magus wanted with Logan or what they're leaving in search of? Logan's buddies up in the north believe he's dead, so what are we paying attention to them for? Are they important or just filling in pieces of the world? I have no idea, but there's 2 more books & I'm hoping that early book 2 content will give me some answers.

In the end, I'd describe this as something close to the gathering of a RPG group that doesn't get along too much lol.

Incredible story, brutal and dark but very well written and entertaining with very satisfying moments and fights, and a tiny bit of humor here and there. I’m excited to continue the trilogy!

Trilogies tend to ask you to be patient in the second book were you are not given much of a conclusion as a set up for the third book. Abercrombie obviously has no problems dispensing with a palate satisfying ending to the first book and it simply runs out of text as the band of merry folks get on their way south. Had the writing not been so accomplished I would be a hell of a lot more annoyed. The problem is now when will I get around to the second one...
