David moray is a spineless, narcissistic, philandering sack of sh*t and I hate him with every fiber of my being

The first quarter of this book was boring but it picked up pretty quickly. Although this story filled me with rage, I have to admit A.J Cronin knows how to write a damn good story and a fascinating character study (even though I loathe this character)

Not a book I want to read at the moment. When I’m later in the right mood, I’ll read it.

I liked the books/paintings mentioned in the story. I liked the beginning till the scene on the ship. Then I thought more about characters and plot in Tender is the night by Fitzgerald and than Kate happened and I couldn't wrap my mind around her sudden sympathy to the stranger. OK, definitely, charismatic fellow, but old and the whole trip to Switzerland is rather unbelievable for me. Also I adore The poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and if you want to know more about the situation in Kongo briefly mentioned by Cronin, I ardently recommend you to read it. Also thought a lot about Rebecca by Du Morier and Jane Eyre - female characters were fantastic there.

I really enjoyed reading this book more than I thought. It has a real classics vibe and although there were some sections I found a bit tedious to go trough overall it is an interesting story that explores some interesting themes and has a really horrible, but very well written protagonist.
