for a book that deals with a lot of heavy topics (do check out the TWs), i thought it managed to deal with it in a way that was not funny but a bit more lighthearted than one would expect? i enjoyed the natural blend of traditional indigenous words in the story. just a good read overall

That was brilliant and painful, filled with so much trauma and with the repercussions of what settler colonialism does.

Don't quite know how to rate this, so it may change the more I think about it (as in go higher!).

I'm so glad I'm studying this for my English course as there's so much in there to unpack and explore.

Dark, whip smart, funny, soul exposing account of a Bundjalung family confronting their histories, traumas, and personal demons.

This one had a slow start for me. I struggled to get into it for a bit - this was actually a DNF for me earlier this year that I gave another go. But the second act was gripping. And the voice!! A really sophisticated, earthy, grounded narration with sprigs of magical realism. Really enjoyed this one once I was in the right mindset for it.
