This was well written and the story was super compelling. I think it would have resonated more with me if I were in college or high school - definitely should be read by all young adults out there. The trigger warnings are intense so please take caution before proceeding.

After reading the “big bisexual novel,” these are my thoughts:

OLD ENOUGH is a very thought-provoking debut about self-discovery and the journey one takes when dealing with, and accepting, trauma. The book mainly follows the trauma of sexual assault, so take this trigger warning into consideration and read with care.

I really liked the layout of Sav’s recovery process in dissecting what happened to her when she was sixteen. Haley Jakobson does a great job writing Sav’s internal monologue when she experiences flashbacks that make her anxious in the present day. The timeline switches were also very well placed so readers were able to understand why parts of the past are integrated into the present-day chapters.

The book was also very funny. While it did come off as cringy at times, it also made it relatable whenever Sav’s internal - and sometimes external - commentary during gay panic situations were pretty comical. This goes for other characters too, not just Sav. I loved Candace and Vera so much, and Wesley was also a delight whenever they were in a chapter.

I think the main turnoff was the first chapter or two. It seemed like there was more showing than telling, and since the first chapters of a book are the most important, it turned me off a little bit because I wasn’t sure if it was going to set the tone for the rest of the book.

Overall, OLD ENOUGH was a great debut, and I can tell that Jakobson’s writing and storytelling has nowhere to go but up.

» liked «
- the general feeling of a safe space for exploring genders, sexualities, queerness, and polyam.
- the journey that Sav (our female main character) goes on to work through her feelings about her rape/sexual assault.
- there was a broad and diverse group of side characters within the story from my perspective as a cis-bi-Caucasian woman.
- the perspective switches from Sav now (as a sophomore in college) to Sav then (growing up with Izzie through her Junior year of high school)
- queer supportive friend groups! End of. That's the entire like.

» "disliked" «
- Sav's inner monologue was repeated in a couple of instances. She would think something and then say it out loud. When you're listening to the audiobook, it could be not very clear. Not a big deal for me.
- I think there could have been an additional exploration of relationships between Sav and the side characters, but that's just me never wanting this story to end, so, like... Can we get some spin-offs? Please?

» overall «
I loved the coming of age, struggle with what justice means, and almost "love letters" to her childhood best friend. If Sav had shared some of those perspectives with her, they wouldn't have been so doomed from the start-esque.

I wasn't expecting to feel all the feels reading this, but I should have known better.

Overall, if you enjoy coming of age, queer romance, and people supporting people with a splash of college life, I think you'll enjoy this.

As for the audiobook performance, 10s across the board. I loved the narration, and by the end of the book, I knew who was talking based on the inflections/subtle voice changes/attitudes.

I always refuse to pick a #1 favorite book of the year, but I have to be honest: Whenever someone has the nerve to ask me what my favorite book I read in 2023 is, Old Enough is the first one that comes to mind.

Old Enough is a campus novel (and I freaking love campus novels) with coming-of-age elements. Savannah, the main character, has recently come out as bisexual and is grappling with her new-found community and dating life at college, a traumatic past, and a very old friendship she fears she has outgrown. This book has much to say about the concept of found family, the complexities of friendship, and living as a sexual assault survivor.

I've tried and tried, but my words really can't accurately describe how much of an accomplishment I found this book—by a debut author!—to be. I closed it after the last page and instantly thought, "Wow. That was a perfect novel."
