I love that Tony Medina asked artists to illustrate and create art for each of his poems. Beautiful.

I especially liked the introduction poem. This book reminds me that Black boys are just boys and like (dislike) the same stuff.

Fourteen poems and 13 artists. This is told from different voices to express the individuality and similarities of growing up.

The magic of this book is its artistry, both in the illustrations and in the poetry.

This book is a collection of 13 tanka poems by Tony Medina, each one illustrated by a different Black artist. I thought it was awesome to see so many different art styles and interpretations of the poems. Short bios on each artist are included.

Tony Medina writes 13 tanka poems that depict various aspects and snippets of Black boys. The introductory poem (not a tanka poem), is detailed, refreshing, and fun as it encompasses various types of Black boys. This poem acknowledges Black boys who love sports, care for their moms, "emulate their dads", and "Black boys [who] study the stars". I appreciated this poem the most because it shows Black boys cannot be homogenized into this one notion or understanding. Instead, it speaks to how Black boys are creative, have feelings, and should be cherished. The remaining poems speak to this. Each poem, another thing I enjoyed, is accompanied by illustrations that bring the meaning to life. I enjoyed "Anacostia Angel", "The Charmer", "Lazy Hazy Daze", and "Givin' Back to the Community the most." These reflect simple and revered aspects and experiences.
