This was very intertwining and I definitely didn’t know the ending from the start. I only say 4 stars bc although I liked it, I didn’t feel super connected to the story or characters.

I loved this book. I really feel connected to the characters and want to follow their story lines. I have read all of Karin Slaughter’s books and they never disappoint.

Karin Slaughter writes murder mystery fiction, where the murders are… sometimes gross.

In this book Slaughter brings back Andrea Oliver, from Pieces of Her (a book by Slaughter, and then a TV show). In the previous book, she had very little self-esteem, and less backbone. That book saw her develop some determination. She has developed some more since.

This book sees Oliver join the Marshall Service, start protecting a federal judge and investigate a murder that’s similar to her earlier experiences. It’s… not perhaps as gross as of her other books, but it rattles along, all the same.

The question is if you can believe that Oliver has developed some backbone, and been able to blag her way into the Marshall’s Service. If you can buy that I think you’ll enjoy this.

Spoiler alert!

Mostly enjoyable and well-plotted. The thing that didn't ring quite true for me was the reaction of people in the 80s to a girl getting pregnant. Probably because I was a teen in the early 80s, in a very small town, and people in general just weren't that shitty. Makes for a better story, though.

So many twists/ it was a struggle to know who was a good guy and who wasn’t! I loved it!! Kept you thinking until the end- and then the ‘phone call’ !?!?
