Reading as part of a book club at work.
I've seen the movie a hundred times, but never read the book. I'm glad I finally read it. The characters are so charming that it makes you want to jump back in time and meet them all.

I really enjoyed this book, I’m a sucker for historical fiction. This novel definitely is a southern adventure. I loved all the characters and it’s as good as the movie. I wish certain characters had more of a story but I really understand Evelyn. I need to go make all of Sipseys recipes 😭. I love how food is a character here, the news articles were funny. I do have to give 4 stars because of unfortunately how the black characters are written. It being based in the early 1920/1930s and actually written in the 80s. There are a lot of flaws here. I feel like Miss. Flagg didn’t mean harm and honestly this is a better historical representation of the last book I read. Definitely some magical nergoes here but ya know. I’ve read Stephen King it is what it is. Also the book is a little too long and a little yappy. Making this a screen play was a good idea because I liked the changed ending.

this book has its flaws but i’m giving it 5 stars purely because i have such happy memories associated with it and so it’s such a nice reread. also makes me feel better about growing up and not being as close to people who were once my closest community because this book really illustrates that - you meet people, you have the bestest friends, but as life goes on you move apart and you still find amazing people and happy times but it’s different and it’s sad but it’s okay because you’re so lucky to have made those memories to begin with

I saw the film version once, a long time ago, and I didn’t remember it well, but I knew it was one of those cult favorite kind of movies. So when I saw the library had the audiobook, I thought I’d give it a try. Honestly, I thought it was boring, and I couldn’t get past the racism. I really had to drag myself through this one.
