An enjoyable romp, if rather sloppily written. It was a bit of fluff - no deep story, the set up is shaky, but I found myself liking it despite its very obvious flaws. Could have easily been a trilogy with better, more fleshed out writing and set up, but you know, I don't shed any tears over the purchase!

We'll see if any of his other, later works retain these same flaws, or if he only gets better with time. Couldn't shake the sense of some serious nerd wish-fulfillment, but it was good despite that. Or maybe because of it. I'm not sure yet.

I am so glad my husband suggested I read this one. Once upon a time Calvin Stringel was a promising young mechanical engineer. After getting burned by employer, and several bad decisions and years later he is now known as the modest supervillian MechaniCAL. Only now the world finds itself being taken over by parasitic mind-controlling bugs and because of his metal suit, Cal seems to be one of the few people unaffected. After managing to save an A-list superheroine and enough of her friends to save the world, life is turned upside down for Cal. Suddenly he's one of the good guys and when it comes to everyday choices between good and evil, it's harder for Cal to come down on the right side of the line. Add in another super who's carrying a major grudge and a complicated relationship with a super-hottie and this entertaining little gem will keep you engaged through to the fake-out ending.

My husband was offended when I compared this to Dr. Horrible, but if you've got a soft spot for villians who aren't so much evil as a little bruised, you'll like this book.

This was a beach-read for me. Probably the last 1st-person superhero/villain book I'll read as they seem to top out at OK or fine.

Picked up on a whim. It was a lot better than I was expecting but there was still a bit of 'Nice Guy' writing that crept into the narrative here and there.

Book is a lot better if you've read the prequel!

While I enjoyed this book the first time, I enjoyed it a lot more after I've read the prequel. You've got a better connection with the main characters when you've read the whole backstory. I'm looking forward to start reading the 3rd book in this series later today!
