I was teetering on whether I should give this 4 or 5 stars. I don't think this is book is perfect in its execution, but ultimately I gave it 5 stars. Mostly due to the fact that I just couldn't stop reading this book. It was so gripping that every time I wasn't reading all I could think about was how much I wanted to keep reading this book! I loved every character (even Themba) and Tau's journey had me deeply invested every single second. Absolutely spectacular.

"The wars you’ll wage aren’t decided when you fight them. They’re decided before that, by the extent of your effort and the substance of your sacrifices. They are decided by the choices you make every single day. So ask yourself: ‘how powerful do I choose to be?"

This book didn’t hook me right from the start. I didn’t like Tau, I found him whiny and petulant. But once he gained a purpose I was hooked. Tau made some frustrating decisions overall that had me cringing but overall the story, the world, and the cast of characters won me over. The climax and conclusion to the story felt like such a good fit!

I wanted to like this book.  I quickly became impatient with it,  then at times frustrated and also bored. So many fight scenes! I struggled with lack of character development as well as plot,  world building.  It only really drew me in again in last quarter of book.  Enough to make me want to read #2.

The writing in this is very good, and I think for those who like more military/battle oriented fantasy stories you would love this. For me those don't hit as well as other fantasies, but I fully recognize that this is a good book for the people who like it. It's also very revenge oriented and gory, lots of action and tension and some political intrigue as well. If you like any of that I would recommend this to you, it just wasn't fully for me.

I did like many parts of this, specifically the world and setting. I thought they were really unique and they felt very well thought out. Over all, I thought this was fine and don't have any major issues with it, though I'm not certain I will continue the series based on my personal tastes.
