This was a fun introduction to these characters for me (I'm not much of a comic reader these days and have always been more interested in Marvel's heroes) with some good writing (especially toward the end) and some really beautiful art (the splash pages!) but I always forget how hammy comics are when I take a break from them. I think most comic writers are working toward the kind of earnestness and sincerity that I really like to see in media, but the genre's devotion to that really specific, weirdly old-fashioned language often makes characters come off like the PSA at the end of A Very Special Episode. I mean, I'd still go to bat for comics any day (and Very Special Episodes too, honestly) but I think there's a desperate need for language evolution in hero comics that just isn't happening and it's a huge bummer.
