One characteristic of a good book is that the author makes you care about the protagonist. One reason Great Expectations is so good is that you care deeply about Pip's adventures. "Oh no", you say, "what's going to happen to Pip?" And so you read on, fully engaged in Pip's life.

So too, it would seem with Walter Mosley's character Easy Rawlins. By mere chance, I got two Easy Rawlins' books to take on vacation, and again by chance, they followed in chronological order. After I finished the second book, I just had to find the third: "oh no, what's going to happen between Easy and Bonnie?"

So, I read this book to find out. Along the way, we have all kinds of musing about race issues, the Vietnam war, the fragility of life, etc. This, like its two previous siblings, was a good read.

Wikipedia indicates this book to be the last one published in this series, so I can ask what happens next, but I won't actually know anytime in the near future, perhaps never.

It occurred to me while reading about hardened assassin Christmas Black and his adopted vietnamese daughter Easter Black, that maybe Walter Mosely has been writing anime this entire time??

One day when Feather was little and you were at work, she was about to knock over a hot pot, and I wasn’t close enough so I told her no.”The look on my son’s face was one of fascination. He was remembering that word.“It surprised both of us,” he said. “Feather’s jaw dropped and her eyes got real big. It felt like I opened my mouth and a bird, a big bird flew out. I wondered if there were any more inside of me, and then Feather ran up and hugged me and told me to read her a story.”

Good, real good. Interesting to see how people's attitudes change and become more honest towards each other as the series progresses.

Set in the context of the recent Watts riots in LA, this mystery had all of the fun of a standard private dick story, with some critical race stuff thrown in for good measure. The women were flat as can be, which is also standard for the private eye trope, but I so valued the historical context and the honesty about being a black man in ‘67 i was willing to role with the more stale parts of the narrative and just enjoy the ride. I’ll listen to the whole series for sure, and def check out our Denzel in the DITBD movie as well.

Another great entry in the Easy Rawlins series. Though the formula might be getting a bit stale, the ending twist and Easy’s internal strife make this a bit different than previous entries. He is a complicated man who is written to be morally grey, but somehow always seems like the best person you’d want to help you.
