Sometimes I read a short excerpt of a book then put it on my TBR without knowing anything else about it, and this was not one of those times when it worked in my favor.

I was very surprised to see a lot of writing about her time in Singapore, but this just wasn’t my cup of tea. To be really honest, it felt like I was reading the diary entries of an aspiring SingLit author (specifically, the type that feels slightly forced or cliché).

I’m very sure there’s an audience for this book who would appreciate her musings on Singapore, but it just felt trite to me. The only part of the book I liked was that original excerpt I read.

I loved this. Filled with intimate, diary-like, imagistic shards and fragments that shapeshift from poetry to prose. Mysterious and moving - I feel like I'll revisit and reread.
