A powerful magician is summoning malicious ghosts to terrify the jewish community and Ze'ev, a jewish exorcist, is just the person to stop them. Zev is a good guy, but jaded after all he's seen, so he has a sense of humor and attitude not unlike John Constantine from Hellblazer. The name Treif Magic refers to magic that isn't sanctioned by the Jewish religion, like necromancy; it's not kosher. I love that there's so much knowledge and passion behind the writing and Jewish mysticism that you believe Zev's magic, ghosts, dream walking, and necromancy could be real. This story was relatively short and it was jam-packed with action. In fact, that's the one flaw I had with the book. I think it could've been a little longer to give time to feel for other characters and maybe explore Zev's past more. Particularly, I wanted to know more about a character named Anthony. I could definitely see there being a sequel, and if there is, I'm excited to read it! This is the second work of John Baltisberger I've read, and if you havent read his Jewish Speculative Fiction yet, you should!
