I read this soon after finishing [b:The Slum and the Ghetto: Immigrants, Blacks, and Reformers in Chicago, 1880-1930|2430215|The Slum and the Ghetto Immigrants, Blacks, and Reformers in Chicago, 1880-1930|Thomas Lee Philpott|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266816991s/2430215.jpg|2437403], and I believe I got far more out of "Native Son" than I otherwise would have. What a powerful portrayal of the damage done by systematic oppression and disenfranchisement of an entire race of people.

I could see what was going to happen - the direction in which the plot would go - and it was too awful and painful to continue. I wasn’t in a place to absorb the story without seriously impacting my own mental health.

I should preface this review by stating that my area of study and interest is the emotional/mental development of the African American male post emancipation, with that said—I enjoyed this book. I read it after finishing Invisible man by Ralph Ellis & it furthered my knowledge & perspective on the (possible) lot, fate, experiences and mentality of the early 20th century black man. What I didn’t like was the story structure of the last 100 pages. The first 300ish pages is packed with happenings & then it moves slow & has many pages that I found unnecessary. Still unpacking the ending but I’d recommend it.
